Why are opioids addictive?

Opioids act on the opioid receptors of your brain. They block pain signals to the brain and give you a feeling of euphoria, or “high.” You might begin abusing opioids because you wish to keep experiencing this euphoric state, but opioids also act on your brain and body in such a way that you become physically dependent on them, leading to addiction.

The opioid medications often prescribed for pain include:

  • Morphine

  • Hydrocodone (Vicodin®)

  • Oxycodone (OxyContin®, Percocet®)

  • Oxymorphone (Opana®)

  • Codeine

  • Fentanyl

Heroin, an illegal opioid, is chemically derived from morphine.

What are the symptoms of opioid addiction?

Some common signs of opioid addiction include:

  • Inability to control how much you use the drug

  • Failure to stop using the drug

  • Spending a lot of time and money obtaining the drug

  • Needing more and more of the drug for the same effect

  • Failure to meet obligations or work responsibilities

  • Engaging in risky behavior under the influence.

Because opioids are physically addictive, they cause withdrawal symptoms when you stop using them. Withdrawal symptoms include nausea, vomiting, fever, and depression.

How is opioid use disorder treated?

Neu Urgent Care is an expert who treats opioid addiction with knowledge and compassion. He designs customized recovery plans based on your individual needs.

Your treatment plan may include behavioral counseling, medication to treat withdrawal symptoms, and long-term follow-up care. For many cases of opioid addiction, we recommend the medication VIVITROL® to prevent relapse.

What is VIVITROL?

VIVITROL is an opioid antagonist, meaning it blocks opioid molecules from attaching to opioid receptors in the brain. After you’ve fully detoxed from opioid use, VIVITROL is taken monthly.

We may prescribe another medication to help you with withdrawal symptoms during your detox period. Once detox is complete, VIVITROL makes it impossible for you to get high from opioids. This prevents relapse while you readjust emotionally and physically to living without a dependency on opioids.

Studies show that VIVITROL decreases your chance of relapse while increasing your chance of remaining in treatment. If you think VIVITROL may be right for you, We discuss the risks and benefits with you in detail before you begin your treatment.

Don’t let opioid addiction ruin your health and your life. Call Neu Urgent Care to schedule a confidential, same-day consultation, make an appointment online, or simply walk into the clinic today.
