What is a DOT physical?
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) requires all drivers with a commercial driver’s license (CDL) to have a physical examination by a certified physician on a routine basis. The purpose of a DOT physical is to ensure that new and established commercial drivers don’t have any physical, emotional, or mental health issues that interfere with their ability to safely drive a commercial vehicle.

What is involved in a DOT physical exam?
The medical requirements for a CDL include:

20/40 color vision in both eyes (corrective lenses are acceptable)

Ability to hear a forced whisper 5 feet away

Maximum blood pressure of 160/100 (can be controlled by medication)

Blood sugar of 200 mg/dl or less

Diabetes controlled through oral medication or diet, but not with insulin injections

No use of schedule 1 drugs, amphetamines, narcotics, or habit-forming drugs
If you have cardiovascular disease, you’ll need to provide evidence that you can pass a stress test as well as a physician’s note stating you’re physically able to drive a commercial vehicle.
In some cases, you can receive an exception for a medical condition. Typically, you’ll be asked to have more frequent physicals than usual when you have a medical exception.
When will I receive my DOT certificate?
Once you’ve passed your physical, your provider issues your medical examination certificate during your appointment. Your certificate is valid for up to 24 months, but you may need to return for another exam sooner if you have a medical exception.
